Autism Friendly Accomodations at Coastal Chevrolet Cadillac Nissan
As a third-generation family owned business, family is very important to us as can be found in our six Core Values. Our mission is to provide everyone with the best experience they will ever have at a dealership, and that includes all members of our customer’s families. It is for this reason that we are proud to partner with Champion Autism Network, Inc. (CAN) – a nonprofit autism awareness organization based in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. We have been working with CAN to create an environment that is comfortable and all-inclusive, including a dedicated sensory friendly room at the dealership.
According to AutismSpeaks.org, “Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.” Our local organization CAN helps businesses in our area seek out ways to provide better accommodations, service and support to people with autism and their families.
All of our employees at Coastal (service technicians, management and sales staff) have attended seminars to learn ways to better serve members of our communities and their families that are on the autism spectrum. We also commit ourselves to reducing the amount of time spent in the dealership for those families and offer expedited service and loaner vehicles so the amount of time spent inside is reduced. Other ways in which we attempt to make the experience more sensory friendly is to offer the option to turn off the lights in the car wash tunnel if needed and we include a discount at the Coastal Car Wash as well.
As the first CAN certified autism friendly car dealership in our area, we encourage other local businesses to join in the efforts to become an inclusive community that offers better awareness, understanding and accommodations for those living with autism in our area. There are many resources available to families in the area which can be utilized to find activities, partners, support groups and more.
