Coastal FAQ

Our story began with the vision and 'customer first philosophy' of our founder, Jim English. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Jim entered the automotive world in Charlotte, NC. Though he started in accounting, he quickly realized he was a natural salesperson. He spent decades mastering the business, from the showroom floor to dealership ownership, always driven by the goal of providing a lasting legacy for his family.

The Coastal legacy began on June 29, 1990 when Jim and his son, David English, purchased C&O Motors in Georgetown, SC and renamed it Coastal Chevrolet Oldsmobile. Following Jim’s unexpected passing later that year, David took the helm as Dealer Principal and Owner, and he continues to serve as the company's President today. He carried his father’s legacy forward alongside his mother, Betty English, and his sister, Angie English Brown, who remains an Executive Manager at the dealership. For over 30 years, Betty was a cornerstone of the family business until her passing in 2021.

Today, the English family continues to honor Jim and Betty's hard work as a proud third-generation business. This legacy continues today with the third generation of the English family. David’s daughter, Brooke English Guy, joined Coastal in 2014 and has served as Dealer Principal and Owner since 2018. She is joined by Angie’s son, Brandon Brown, who began his career with the team in 2012, served as Finance Manager in 2019, and was appointed Sales Manager in 2022. Additionally, David’s son, James English, joined the company in 2017 and was promoted to Pre-Owned Vehicle Manager in 2018.


The Coastal Timeline

1980: Jim English Started Coastal. He was awarded one of only two open Datsun points in the United States at that time. At the time, it was the most sought-after franchises in America.  

1990: Jim and David English purchase C&O Motors on June 29th. Following Jim's passing in December, David, Betty, and Angie take over operations.

2000: The dealership is awarded the Cadillac franchise.

2002: After GM discontinues Oldsmobile, the business becomes Coastal Chevrolet Cadillac Nissan and relocates to Pawleys Island, SC.

2004: The brand-new Coastal Nissan building opens adjacent to the Chevrolet Cadillac facility.

2012: The third generation begins its leadership path as Brandon Brown joins the team.

2014: Brooke English Guy joins the family business, beginning her journey toward leadership.

2017: James English joins the team.

2018: Brooke English Guy officially becomes Dealer Principal and Owner, marking a new era for the dealership. James English begins his role as the Pre-Owned Vehicle Manager.

2019: David English opens sister company Coastal Car Wash in Pawleys Island. Brandon Brown transitions into the role of Finance Manager.

2021: The Coastal family honors the memory and 30-year contribution of matriarch Betty English.

2022: Brandon Brown returns to the sales floor as a Sales Manager.

Why did Coastal Chevrolet Cadillac and Coastal Nissan choose Pawleys Island as our permanent home? To be where our community lives, works, and drives. 

While our roots began in the heart of Georgetown in 1980, the English family recognized a shift in the region's landscape by the early 2000s. As Georgetown County expanded and the Waccamaw Neck grew into a vibrant hub of families and local businesses, our leadership team, led by David English, saw an opportunity to evolve alongside our neighbors.

In 2002, we made the strategic decision to consolidate our Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Nissan dealerships into a flagship campus in Pawleys Island. We chose our location off Highway 17 for three specific reasons: 

Accessibility for the Grand Strand: We wanted to provide a more convenient, central location for drivers traveling between Georgetown, Murrells Inlet, and Myrtle Beach. 

A Commitment to Georgetown County: While many businesses moved further north, we remained dedicated to our home in Georgetown County, ensuring our tax dollars and community support stayed local. 

Modernizing the Experience: Our Pawleys Island campus allowed us to build state-of-the-art service centers that could handle the unique needs of coastal drivers, from routine maintenance to specialized care for vehicles exposed to salt air and local terrain. 

Choosing Pawleys Island wasn't just about a new address; it was about ensuring that the English family legacy remained accessible to the next generation of South Carolina drivers. We didn't just move to a new town, we planted deeper roots in the community we’ve called home since 1980.
